Hurricane Matthew is no joke. This is the country's biggest natural disaster in years, and as it begins to make landfall in the US after it decimated homes and other structures in Haiti and the Bahamas, I wanted to highlight a possibly little-known Facebook feature that will help you keep in touch with your loved ones.

You can use the Facebook Safety Check to check in with your family if you live in the path of the hurricane (or another affected area).

If you're in an affected area, look for an alert at the top of your Facebook feed to check in.

If you don't live in the area but know people who are, you can subscribe to notifications whenever your loved one checks in as "safe."

Stay safe, friend. I hope this helps you and the people you care about!
